Description

The course provides basic understanding of boreal forest ecosystems, their functions and biodiversity. The course themes also include forestry, forest use planning, forests legistlation and management. Central theme is also alternative uses and values of forests, forest ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation.


Learning outcomes

After this course students can describe main natural dynamics of boreal forests in different spatial scales. Students can explain how forests are managed for timber production and how management is administered and guided. Students are able to tell the main structural differences between managed forests and forests in natural state, and the consequences of these differences for biodiversity. Students have a general understanding on multiple purposes and uses of forests, forest ecosystem services and their values. Students know at the general level sustainable use of forests from economic, ecological and social perspectives.

Kurssilla on läsnäolovelvoite tapaamisissa. Kurssi sisältää kirjallisia töitä, omatoimisen maastotehtävän sekä ryhmätöitä.
