Content
This course introduces theoretical perspectives, research and methodological approaches for investigating features of language and culture in professional contexts. We will discuss a range of topics relevant to communication in the workplace. These include professional identities and communities, features of texts at work, how to transcribe and analyse face-to-face and digitally mediated interaction, the use of English as lingua franca in working life and language and gender in the workplace.

Assessment details
Lecture participation, course diary and project work (workplace visit) OR written assignments and project work (workplace visit). The assessment criteria are available in Moodle.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course students will be able to apply concepts and methods in the study of discourse and interaction in analysing texts, talk and digital communication in selected professional contexts.
Additional information
Attendance requirement for completion method 1 (contact teaching) is 80%. Completion method 2 is based on independent study only.
