Content
The course focuses on multilingualism and how it shows in an English as a foreign language classroom, especially in Finland. The course familiarizes the student with the central concepts related to multilingualism and the consequences of multilingualism to individuals and societies in relation to language education. We will examine today’s linguistic environments from the point of view of language learning and teaching, especially considering the role of English as a lingua franca.Completion methods

The final grade consists of 30 % presentation and 70% final paper.Learning outcomes
After completing the course students will be able to
- explain the central concepts related to multilingualism and categorizations of languages,
- reflect on the consequences of multilingualism to individuals and societies, esp. in relation to language education
- understand and reflect upon today’s linguistic environments from the point of view of language learning and teaching, especially considering the role of English as a lingua franca,
- discuss how multilingualism shows in an English as a foreign language classroom in Finland, and
- carry out a small scale study on one of the aspects discussed in the course.
