ENVS1123 Instrumental environmental analyses (3 cr)
Description
This is laboratory course in which students learn pretreatment of environmental samples (extraction methods) and how to use high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC-FID and GC-MS), spectrophotometer and stable isotope mass spectrometer (SIRMS). In the course student learn how to identify organic compounds from chromatogram. Students keeps recods on their lab work by writing learning diary. In the course, student extracts organic compounds from given environmental samples and determine what kind of organic compounds their sample includes. Student prepare report of given sample and represent it to whole group after two weeks of working in laboratory.
Learning outcomes
Student::
- knows diffferent pretreatment and analysing techniques, and the importance of the quality assuarance of his/hers own working.
- knows which kind equipment is needed in a certain problems for analysation.
- understands the limits and possibilities of different measuring methods.
Additional information
Working in the laboratory will be done in pairs.
