Description

The course focuses on non-systemic violence. The focal areas are violence as it occurs and is encountered in everyday life, institutions and close relationships. The course is part of the multidisciplinary Violence Research study module.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student will:

  • be familiar with the key explanatory models, theories and source materials used in historical research on violence
  • recognise and analyse historical manifestations of violence and their characteristics
  • be aware of the gendered nature of violence
  • understand the connection between violence and its forms and social and cultural values, structures and the changes within them
  • understand the spatial and temporal variability of violence

On completion of the studies through contact teaching students will also have

  • acquired experience of groupwork and improved their interactive skills
  • enhanced their oral interactive skills and negotiation skills
  • acquired skills for operating in new situations

On completion of the studies through examinations on set books students will also have

  • enhanced their problem-solving skills
  • improved their written skills and argumentation skills
  • acquired skills in the analysis of information and the ability to comprehend extensive entities

On completion of the studies by writing essays students will morever have

  • learned more about information seeking and writing scientific text
  • enhanced their written communication and argumentation skills
  • acquired experience of project skills by planning their own actions and use of time

Avoimen yliopiston väkivaltatutkimuksen opintojen opiskelijoille suositellaan edeltäviksi opinnoiksi VVAA5001 Väkivaltatutkimus, johdanto (5 op) opintojaksoa.
