HYTJ1000 Doctoral Seminar (10 cr)
Description
Presenting his/her research plan and research work, giving and receiving peer feedback. Ethical discussions regarding his/her own field of science and good scientific practice. As a compulsory part of the doctoral seminar, the faculty organises an introduction to the practices of doctoral studies.
Completion
modes shall be agreed upon in more detail with both the seminar leader and
supervisor-in-charge, and these shall be entered in the doctoral student’s doctoral
study plan. The
doctoral seminar cannot be completed through conference presentations, papers
or posters.
Language of the doctoral seminar is Finnish, English or other language used in this scientific community.
Assignments are assessed on the basis of how the doctoral student masters the contents of the study unit and achieves the learning outcomes of the study unit. A pass requires
- participation in the doctoral seminar or equivalent so that the total work amounts to the 10 ECTS credits required
- active participation in discussion
- presenting the research plan and the progress of the research work in the seminar
Learning outcomes
-understands the different phases and practices involved in dissertation work, such as the degree system and supervisory process
-is familiar with research funding
-is able to participate in scientific discussion both orally and in writing
-is able to justify his/her own solutions in the licentiate thesis/dissertation work
-is familiar with the topical discussion in his/her own field of science
-has ethical responsibility and acts according to good scientific practice
-is familiar with various employment opportunities requiring expertise.
