Description

  • DNA, RNA, chromosomes and DNA replication

  • From DNA to RNA: transcription

  • Genetic expression regulation and its study

  • From RNA to protein(s)

  • Biological membranes and membrane proteins

  • Membrane transport and action potentials

  • Cell exoskeleton and muscular contraction

  • Parts of the cell and transport between them

  • Cell communication

  • Cell cycle, cell growth and degradation, and genetics

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • describe cell structure and its link with cell function

  • explain fundamentals of genetic information storage and transcription information

  • describe how genetic transcription leads to protein synthesis and how proteins function and affect cell regulation

  • explain fundamentals of cell size and number regulation

  • describe fundamentals of cell movement, messaging and communication

  • connect cell and molecular biology knowledge to physical activity and exercise physiology

  • expand and develop learning from other biochemical courses

  • critically evaluate misinterpretations related to the understanding and application of cell and molecular biology and debate these through scientific concepts
