Description

Introduction to basics of statistics.

Basic concepts, introduction to gathering data: sampling methods and designing experiments, describing data using tables, graphs and statistics, testing proportions, expected values and independence, basics of variance and regression analysis.

Exam in English. Based on the book Moore & McCaib (& Craig): Introduction to the practice of statistics


Learning outcomes

After the course the student

  • knows the basic concepts in statistics
  • is familiar with basic sampling methods and designing experiments
  • is able to describe data using tables, graphs and statistics
  • is able to test proportions, expected values and independence and interprete the results
  • knows the basics of variance and regression analysis.

Evaluation criteria:
Kurssitentin arviointiin vaikuttavat menestys kurssitentissä ja mahdollisesti aktiivisuus harjoitustehtävien tms. tekemisessä. Arvosana-asteikko on opintojakson kotisivulla. Avoin yliopisto: Hyväksyttyyn suoritukseen edellytetään tentin maksimipistemäärästä vähintään 50 %. Määräpäivämääriin mennessä palautetuilla harjoitustehtävillä voi kerätä hyvityspisteitä, jotka lisätään hyväksytyn tentin pistemäärään. Harjoitustehtävistä saatavat pisteet ja niiden vaikutus loppuarvosanaan ilmoitetaan erikseen opetuksen yhteydessä.
